About Psychological Injury- Understanding Trauma and Recovery Day Program

The Psychological Injury- Understanding Trauma and Recovery Day Program supports people that are affected by traumatic events in their lives (e.g., domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse, bullying, vehicle accidents, war combat or any other overwhelming threatening events). It utilise concepts and strategies from a range of therapy models (e.g., Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) to assist people to better manage the significant effects of trauma.
 

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You have been feeling little or no enjoyment in your usual activities.
  • You have experienced significant trauma and have been struggling to cope.
  • Your trauma has resulted in drastic impacts on your life (e.g., heighten emotions, flashbacks, nightmares, sleeping difficulties, etc).
  • The way you feel makes it hard for you to focus on your daily activities or relax at the end of the day.
  • You are experiencing overwhelming anxiety and fears, and find it hard to break away from them.

What you will experience

Throughout this program, you will participate in group sessions of between 8-12 participants that are led by allied health professionals. Participants will be supported to share lived experiences, and to learn evidence-based coping strategies and skills. Each session focuses on exploring a practical skill that you will have time to practice before the next session, as well as shared with the group what you have learnt for feedback and input.

Treatment objectives

Objective 1

Understanding the Impact of Trauma – Identify, process and acknowledge how your traumatic experience has affected you physiologically, psychologically, emotionally and interpersonally.

Objective 2

Managing Triggers and Intense Emotions- Explore and learn how to respond to triggers, as well as develop strategies to better manage intense emotions and distress.

Objective 3

Being in the Here and Now – Practice mindfulness skills and being in the present moment to help manage symptoms often associated with Trauma (e.g., heighten emotions, flashbacks, nightmares, sleeping difficulties, etc).

Objective 5

Reconnecting with Meaningful Activities - Connect with values that are important to you and learn how to utilise these values to guide you to respond to stressful situations and maintain significant areas of your life.

Objective 4

Developing Empowerment and Shifting Unhelpful Behaviours - Learn to use graded exposure to reduce unhelpful behaviours.

Objective 6

Understanding Thoughts and Beliefs - Learn about how your unhelpful thoughts and beliefs can contribute to how you feel and develop strategies to develop more balanced perceptions to get you through difficult situations.

How to get started

FOR NEW PATIENTS to access this treatment, we will need a valid referral from your general practitioner to one of our psychiatrists at South Eastern Private Hospital who will complete a preadmission assessment with you to ensure that the treatment is suitable for you. Referrals can be sent via our online referral on our website - www.southeasternprivate.com.au (i.e., under the referral section). FOR EXISTING MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS to access this treatment, simply discuss with your treating psychiatrist at South Eastern Private Hospital who will then assess your suitability and if appropriate, will refer you to our day programs. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?

Patients are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying or funding via TAC/DVA are also an option. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with South Eastern Private Hospital by calling 03 9549 0111.

Who will find this program helpful?

People who are struggling with overwhelming stress and disruptions to their lives due to experiencing and/or witnessing significant traumatic events.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

This treatment is designed to be completed within 12 weeks. Participants attend sessions every Tuesday from 9:30am to 3.00pm. Morning tea and lunch are provided. The intake of new participants for this treatment occurs every 12 weeks, and is for admitted patients only. Please note that date, time and duration can be subjected to change.
